The Future is Ancient: Why I’m Returning to My Roots
For the past three years, I’ve been on this long journey. It started with a simple question: Why are we looking to a lab for what the earth has already perfected?
The question I keep pondering is: Why are corporations so bent on putting toxins in everything (and in this case, our hair)? Besides the obvious of it being a cyclical money machine from foods, health, and healthcare... what is it about us that makes them want to keep us dull, dumb, and poisonous? I’ve spent thousands of hours researching ingredients, testing new ideas, and finally (after working with a manufacturer for four months now) I’m just going to bring it out there. I’m not perfect. We live in a world where we use things off the shelf, but I want to make the world a little bit better by educating people. You have the power in your own hands to learn and use these ingredients.
A Legacy in an Avocado
The catalyst of my hair journey was my grandmother in Tiburon, Haiti. She only used avocado. No shampoo, no conditioner. She would mash it up, let it sit, and rinse it with the water from the waterfalls. She had soft black hair and almost zero grey strands.
My father is a Holistic Doctor, so I grew up with these remedies. This is both the tradition passed down and his medical practice. I have an affinity for it. I love mixing ingredients with my hands and learning how far back these ancient practices go. I hope to help future generations reconnect back to their own roots and all the wonders of the natural world and how they help heal us instead of hurt us. This is about putting people over profit.
Natural ingredients are not quick fixes
Natural ingredients are not quick fixes. But if you stick with it over time, you will see results. For the last five months, I’ve been consistent with this ritual:
-
The Foundation: Marshmallow root and slippery elm bark (both as soap and gel).
-
The Tea Rinse: Black rice and rosemary.
-
The Growth Factor: Simple rice water rinses (white or black rice).
I know my hair LOVES rice water. I always see the most growth. While my results with rosemary and black rice have been slow in my opinion, five months later I am finally seeing the difference. My hair is black and shiny with very little breakage on wash days.
I Am Human
I have many passions and curiosities. From Sci-Fi (even though Sci-Fi is becoming real life... if you know you know) to the arts, where I'm currently directing a stage production of Romeo and Juliet.
I stay current in pop culture, and I am not afraid to call out the media low-key when they are factually wrong, like the recent coverage of the Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni case. (if you know you know).
I’m not an expert nor will I ever pretend to be. I offer you to be curious and do your own research. Try these ingredients. They are not quick fixes, but if you stick with it, you’ll see.
The Ancient Glow: Black Rice & Rosemary Tea Rinse Guide
I want you to have the exact tools to do this yourself. I have put together a simple, one-page guide that breaks down the ritual I’ve used for the last five months to get my hair back to its strongest, shiniest state.
Stop guessing and start reclaiming your power. No toxins, no corporate nonsense, just the earth.
